I haven’t taken any pictures of the garden lately so the one below is a few weeks old. Our many flowers on the tomato plant have turned into four small tomatoes - the largest being dime sized. For cherry tomatoes we are well on our way to having a harvest. Not to mention doing 400% better than last year. We are getting close to having jalapeño and strawberry blooms. Our baby pepper plant has...

Nope, didn’t drink too much office coffee. I’m going to go see Savage Beauty at the Met on Friday evening! Just this morning I was reading a review of the collection, and after the glitz and hubub about it I realized that I’m going to be in the area this week. And maybe…just maybe… Let’s just say my scheule is cutting it close. But I’m buying a ticket and...

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything from etsy that is super swoon-worthy. This seller did it for me. I originally clicked for these earrings (which are incredible, but I wish I could see what they looked like on): …but found these lotus petal hoops to be just as charming: Plus, with a shop name of Autumn Equinox, I’m pretty much guaranteed to like it.

budget? what budget?
One of the greatest difficulties with being on a budget is that whenever I see the word “Sale!” I get sucked in. Which inevitably makes me want to start purchasing things, such as this adorable pitcher from Three Potato Four. They have the best collection of vintagy things that make me wish I had known about their site when I was planning our wedding. They always seem to have small...

excitement + drama. oh boy.
Why, yes, I am up blogging at 4:30 in the morning.  Because there was a giant $#($%! bug in my bedroom earlier this morning that Olive decided to hunt. She woke me up to the sound of rustling from under the nightstand and I thought, oh, great. She’s playing in the middle of the night again. WRONG. I turn on the light and realize that she was most certainly looking for something.  And then...

The New Dinosaur: Why I'm Not on Facebook, and Why... →
I think that this is one of the best arguments that I’ve read in quite a while against using (and giving your information to) Facebook. And, a lover of irony, I find it great that you can, in fact, post this article seamlessly to your Facebook page, should you so choose. However, while the following quote is may be reason enough for the author’s refusal to partake, he apparently...

This last Friday we had a little shindig at our home with a few friends. Among other munchies, I served a new recipe - a trifle, made with olive oil pound cake. I served it in half pint mason jars and used a bag of frozen mixed berries - but it would be easy to fancy-pants up with some nicer dessert containers, such as cut crystal dessert cups. I meant to garnish mine with some alley-fresh mint,...

How to Bake Bread on the Grill →
With another steamy DC summer on the way, I absolutely love this idea. I don’t have all the necessary components and soon the biggest one - a grill - will not be ours to use. However, I can’t get over how unique of an idea this is and how great that bread looks.

HuffPo & Big Girls, Small Kitchen on Eating Cheap →
As a food lover on a budget, these are obvious, but great tips. I have made some of BGSK’s under $8 meals, which are seriously delish. And I love that their recipes focus on things a bit more in reach for everyday (both budget-wise, calorie-wise, and time-wise) verses some of the other food blogs I frequent and love.

…and in a reality-check, plus follow up from WCP, I love the sarcasm. It’s completely true - because you find a few people who go out to bars, it doesn’t mean that you have found the hip scene in DC. “I’m just not quite ready to declare a lobbyist who enjoys nightlife as a sign of bohemian transformation.”

Book Review: The Next Christians: The Good News...
I was introduced to the writing of Gabe Lyons while in college; it was around that time that his coauthored book unChristian was released, which focused on research regarding Christianity’s “image problem.” His ideas were interesting to me at the time, so when I saw that his new book, The Next Christians, was available for Kindle download, I purchased it and devoured most of it during our recent...

springtime = shortcakes →
Trader Joe’s had strawberries this week, and I couldn’t resist the first berries of the season. I am hoping to get out picking at some point, as Christi & Cole sent me a delicious canning book for my birthday with some wonderful looking pectin-free jams. This weekend, though, it was all about the shortcakes (link above). The recipe only makes four, and I used less butter than...

Yesterday we went to a flea market fundraiser for a local school, arriving shortly after 2:00 when everything was free! We had a list of things we were scouting for and after walking into the gym I immediately ran over to this desk and claimed it as my own. We picked up some glasses and took our find out to Nameless, who, on the way over we were talking about for being such a great size/car for...

moving on up
with our forthcoming move, i have begun hoarding boxes and planning purges of things we dont need anymore. i have this strange feeling i’ve done it all before (ha!) and in some ways i am anticipating the cleaning out but it is also bittersweet this time. i know we are just moving across the river, but it’s sad to leave the only home we have known together. also, some of the things we...

food (+) politics
Last week was bookended by talk of food, which, if you know anything about me, you know that this is one of my favorite subjects to discuss. Early on in the week, I was invited to attend the Atlantic Food Summit, which addressed issues of sustainability, healthy school lunches, and advancements in agricultural technology (note: while I attended the summit as part of my professional duties, as...

scavengering
so, last weekend, we were driving home from trader joe’s after picking up some last minute easter essentials. and, yet again, i requested that we go peek into someone’s trash pile on the sidewalk because i saw a frame that i was pretty sure was going to be great. m, being the wonderful husband he is, went along with it and we retrieved this giant frame (sticker price on the back -...

quinoa and spring veggie pilaf →
along with the infamous orange rolls, we brought this delish pilaf with for Easter celebrations. instead of peas, as usual, we subbed edamame. also, we threw in fresh thyme and sage at the end and garnished with chives rather than mint as the recipe suggests. all the herbs came from the alley garden - yum!!

WilliamDohman Etsy Shop →
i think that i found this shop on etsy a few days ago as a featured seller. regardless, these signs are great and i’d love to have one for me study nook, but have no idea which one would be most appropriate - leaning towards “read” and “nerd” but “breathe” might be most what i need. saving my pennies!

i love the modern look of these coasters/trivet. i absolutely love coasters - a collection which has expanded beyond those essential for two people and a cat, which is why i won’t be making these this weekend. some point in the future, though, i think they will have to go on the project list. and if they show up in your stocking this christmas, try to pretend you don’t know that they...

spring in the district
you know that spring has officially arrived in dc, not with the coming of the cherry blossoms, but with the unending procession of tourists. this morning, they made their gracious presence known by yelling from one end of the metro car to the middle about their plans to visit the capitol and the spy museum. sharing tips that they had gleaned about how to get tickets to visit the gallery so they...

tomato on a bike
this blog is quickly becoming a blog about how much i love to bike. which is probably good that it is moving away from being entirely catcentric, which made me seem like a 45 year old old maid.  so, tonight i was going on my ride and got tired of the crowded, after-work-trail necessity to constantly announce passing (of pedestrians - not other cyclists. i’m not that good). lots of other...

yesterday was officially deemed by me to be project sunday. we drove all over the place, got dirty and made some progress on our various pending projects. most notably, we got our garden planted. after checking on the available flat sunny spots at our new apartment we decided we would be able to move our garden with us and got to work picking out plants.  we had mint and chives left over from...

the bike chop shop
so, this weekend michael and i were driving through the ot and i exclaimed, “pull the car over! there are two bikes in the trash.” i jumped out and he pulled into the funeral home parking lot and came over to inspect the frames. we picked a purplish/blue bike with hot pink streaks down the side - a little rusty, a broken kick stand, but other than that not too bad for wear. i walked it...
